Calendar of  Activities and Events - September 2003

  • Recent Events
  • During the month of August, a 4 days accounting workshop was organized in the Bekaa and targeted women cooperatives and production units. The evaluation and planning of follow-up activities to this workshop are now underway.
  • The first regional TOT on economic literacy was just completed (6 – 11 September 2003) with the participation of 26 colleagues from Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Morocco and Lebanon. Omar is working on the workshop report as well as on producing a first regional strategy on economic literacy. Meanwhile, local economic literacy workshops in Lebanon as well as in the other countries are in pipeline.
  • Youth Leadership Website

The new Youth Leadership Website has just been launched in cooperation with Save the Children US and the Ford Foundation. The purpose of the "Youth Leadership Website" is to document and share successes of youth, women, and women based organizations that have taken a leading role in their communities. It is now on-line on a trial basis. A revised and final version will be on line in both Arabic and English within the coming few months.

  • Staff News
  • Justine Rubira has left the CRTD-A office in Beirut but will continue to collaborate with us from Washington. She is currently working with Omar on the development of economic-literacy information sheets and will be attending the WLP international conference in Washington on behalf of CRTD-A along with our Board Member Mishka Moujabber.
  • Recruitment of new interns and volunteers is now on-going. We expect placement to start in October 2003.
  • Lebanon Development Gateway

The new ICT project entitled:” Increasing Information and Collaboration for Social Development in Lebanon through ICTs” has just been launched with the support of the Development Gateway Foundation. The project involves the planning and set up of the Lebanon Development Gateway.

  • Lebanon Development Gateway

CRTD-A is preparing for an extensive 2 days meeting with the LDG Task Manager in order to initiate the first activities of the projects. Meanwhile, discussions are underway with the new webmistress on the proposed structure of the LDG. CRTD-A is also looking for appropriate premises to house the project. Finally, an intensive ICT training is being prepared for CRTD-A staff and core partners.

  • New Publications
  • “Gender and Citizenship in the Middle East” has just come out. It is a joint publication with Dar an Nahar and will hit the local and regional libraries soon after the international Arabic book fair of November 2003. CRTD-A copies may not be distribution before the Book Fair.
  • The latest issue of Majal number 18 is now available in hard or e-copies. The Majal team is also working on reinstating the subscription process for this year.
  • The new joint CRTD-A/RMF publication featuring the results of the PRA study in North Lebanon, South Lebanon, and the Bekaa is expected to be released before the end of September 2003.
