MACMAG GLIP's In-Country Focal Points

MACMAG GLIP is a regional organization, centrally coordinated in Beirut, Lebanon. The Beirut office is the link between the respective country focal points and projects. The focal points in each country are responsible for action plans in line with the organizations aims and objectives.

The primary function of Focal Points is to:

  • disseminate information about GLIP to other organizations and structures within their respective operating environments
  • mobilize new groups to take part in GLIP project activities
  • plan, facilitate, support, monitor and report on in-country GLIP activities
  • distribute information material on GLIP throughout respective countries
  • ensure regular contribution to GLIP publications
  • provide periodic updates and financial reports on GLIP activities to Beirut office
  • act as local monitors for gender and development issues within respective countries
  • participate in GLIP planning, monitoring and review processes
  • benefit from GLIP training workshops
  • support in-country NGOs and groups related to MACMAG GLIP

For a clearer understanding of the roles of in-country focal points, the following examples are given:

Yemen Focal Point: Women Economic Empowerment Association (WEEA)
WEEA is a relatively new organization with funding from the Dutch Embassy. Its membership is extended through most provinces in Yemen. WEEA is currently focused on internal capacity building. Many of its members have benefited from GLIP gender training projects. Information has been directed towards youth and women’s groups across both Yemen and the Sudan. WEEA also provides translation services and has produced an Arabic translation of GTZ’s “Glossary of Macro-Economics from a Gender Perspective’.

Egypt: An umbrella organization for Women and Development (NGOsFWID)
A network of 17 Egyptian development NGOs includes women, gender, health and environmental groups, training centers and other local organizations. The main activities of these groups are networking, capacity building, training and communication on women and development. Another focus area is its advocacy work on gender violence and women’s legal rights through CEDAW. NGOsFWID coordinated the World Women’s March 2000, in Egypt. Members are also active participation in GLIP training and distribution of information in Egypt. With newsletter editing and publishing experience NGOsFWID is now producing Oxfam Links newsletter in Arabic and currently coordinates the production of GLIP’s Regional Arabic Newsletter “Joussour”.

Morocco: Association Democratique des femmes du Maroc (ADFM)
ADFM plays a vital role in the advocacy for women’s rights in Marocco and has led the campaign for the development and adoption of the national plan for the integration of women into development policies, planning and budgeting. ADFM is also responsible for the research and action project for the post-Beijing study of the mechanisms for development and status of women in Arab countries.

Tunisia: Association des Femmes Tunisiennes pour la Recherche et le Developpement (AFTURD)
One of two independent women’s NGOs in Tunisia, AFTURD’s main activities includes research and communication on women’s legal rights. AFTURD is an active member of the Maghrebian network, Collectif Maghreb Egalite 95, and today a focal point for GLIP in Tunis.
