Gender and Advocacy; Advocacy on Gender
Rabat/Morocco, April 2001

As part of MACMAG GLIP on-going gender training and capacity building
programme, a fourth regional workshop was organized in Rabat/Morocco (24/25/26
April 2001) jointly with GLIP’s in-country focal point the Association Democratique
des Femmes du Maroc.

The theme of the workshop was: “Gender and Advocacy; Advocacy on Gender”.
The choice of the theme was based on the following:

  • The centrality of advocacy amongst the current strategies for action pursued
    by MACMAG GLIP focal points, local NGOs and other stakeholders;
  • The paucity of knowledge and skills on advocacy and most particularly on gender and advocacy;
  • The identification of this topic as a priority tool and asset for mainstreaming
    gender in development policies and programs;
  • The existing priority themes for advocacy on gender equality (personal family
    laws, legal reforms, violence against women, women’s political participation,
    etc…) and hence the wealth of local examples and case studies to draw from.

This workshop which has been made possible through the financial support of the
European Union and Oxfam GB, was designed to serve two main aims namely:

  • Contribute to equipping local development NGOs and groups with
    knowledge, theoretical and practical skills for mainstreaming gender in
    the development policies and programs.
  • Contribute to the development of a core group of local gender trainers.
    Husseini.

This workshop was facilitated by Goergina Ashworth from CHANGE/Great Britain
with the support of the workshop planning team consisting of Mina Tafnout
(Association Democratique des Femmes du Maroc and MACMAG GLIP’s focal point
in Morocco), Hamid el Kam (Espace Associatif/Morocco and member of MACMAG
GLIP core group of local trainers) and Lina Abou-Habib (MACMAG GLIP).
